Slavery

If you read my blogs you will see that I firmly believe that there is nothing new under the sun. Whatever we see around us has happened before. It might look different, but it has happened before. I first heard about slaves in the Old Testament at Sunday school. I thought it was something that stopped after the bible was written.

Then I went to movies and saw slavery in the good old USA and realised it had not stopped after the bible was written. It was appalling to me to think that slaves were still around in the late 1800's. What made it worse was to see how badly they were treated. I still cannot believe that people can be bought and sold like animals.

Do you ever think of slavery?

A lot of people think slavery is a thing of the past. Sadly it is not. Today there are 30 million slaves around the world, with India and China the highest number at 8 and 3.6 million respectively. These poor people do not have a choice. Circumstances have led to their situation and they cannot escape.

I am so glad I am no enslaved or am I?

Are you?

Before we answer the question let us take a look at the dictionary definition.

Slave: - “A person who is the legal property of another and is forced to obey them”

Enslave: - “To cause (someone) to lose their freedom of choice or action”

I can only speak for myself in this case, but I have the feeling that if you are honest and ask yourself the question you will find the answer to some things is yes. As soon as we lose our freedom to reject certain behaviour because it is dictated by an unchecked urge to do carry it out, we are in bondage to the behaviour.

My definition of slavery is this.

Slavery: - “The repetitive decision to go ahead with a certain pattern of destructive behaviour despite the consequences thereof”

Are you ready to answer now?

I could offer many examples from my own life and from people I know, but I will let you mull it over and decide for yourself. It is the beginning of a new life when you realise there is a way out. Imagine every one of those slaves if they could find a key to the door of freedom.

I don’t enjoy visiting the zoo. It is a depressing place with cages that imprison animals against their will. We put them there to keep them safe. Safe from whom I ask you?

You don’t have to stay in a self-imposed prison. You have a choice.
